Work starts on new NIFRS Learning & Development Centre at Desertcreat, Co Tyrone

Hamilton Architects proposal NIFRS at Desercreat
Hamilton Architects are delighted that Henry Brothers have started construction work on Phase 1 of the project, the new Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service (NIFRS) Learning & Development Centre at Desertcreat.

Phase 1, valued at around £4m, provides critical fire training infrastructure at the Desertcreat site. A new access road will be constructed from the Dungannon Road to a six-storey tactical firefighting facility and an ancillary support building containing a teaching laboratory, welfare, sanitary accommodation and office.

Ken Henning, MBE, Vice Chair of NIFRS Board and Programme Board member, said: “Work is scheduled to take a year to complete and we plan to have Firefighters using the new facility in early 2019.

“The safety of our Firefighters and the public is our top priority and this new training facility will enable a range of live burn training scenarios from high rise building fires to domestic and commercial property fires.

“This is a milestone moment in this key Programme for Government priority. We have worked closely with the Department of Health, the design team, Hamilton Architects and more recently with Henry Bros, to ensure that we can deliver a facility suited to the training needs of Firefighters for years to come.”
