Work has begun on the new Theatre and Conference Centre for Newry, Mourne and Down District Council (NMDDC), a flagship project at the heart of the Newry City Centre Regeneration Programme.

The commencement of works was officially marked on Friday 29th May with a sod-cutting ceremony attended by representatives from the local arts community, the Department for Communities and NMDDC Councillors. Hamilton Architects is the Economic Operator for the Integrated Consultant Team (ICT).

Supported by Belfast Region City Deal and the Shared Island Initiative, the project will see the careful renovation of the existing Grade II listed Town Hall and the construction of a new modern multi-functional venue on the site of the neighbouring Sean Hollywood Arts Centre. A striking glazed atrium will link the two buildings, encompassing 1,697m2 and 2,287m2 respectively, allowing them to operate as a single venue.

Refurbishment of the Town Hall will provide dressing rooms and WCs, improved access for back of house operations, and new lift and stair access to the main auditorium. Complimenting the historic 460-seater Newry Town Hall theatre, the new building will provide a 255-seater theatre which will accommodate a range of configurations and uses supported by the latest in audio visual and performance systems.

Attending the ceremony, Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Philip Campbell said:

“This is an exciting moment for the Council and our partners as we start to bring our vision for Newry’s historic city centre to life. This investment, made possible through the transformative Belfast Region City Deal and Shared Island Initiative, is a significant commitment to our cultural infrastructure and reflects our confidence in the city’s talented arts and business communities. The new Theatre and Conference Centre will provide a modern, fit-for-purpose space that will support our creative sector and attract new business opportunities.”

The Theatre and Conference Centre is a key element of the Newry City Centre Regeneration Programme, supporting the Council’s vision to enhance cultural activity, attract more visitors, and strengthen the city’s evening economy. The new venue is expected to open to the public in Spring 2028.
