Hamilton Architects presented the transformative design for Greenmount Campus at the UK & Ireland Passivhaus Conference 2025, held at the ICC Belfast on Wednesday 8 October.
The scheme represents one of the most ambitious sustainable education projects in the UK and Ireland, building on the precedent set by our project for South West College; Erne Campus, the world’s first educational building to achieve both Passivhaus Premium and BREEAM Outstanding certifications.
Jointly hosted by the Passivhaus Trust and the Passive House Association of Ireland, this year’s conference centred on the theme “In a changing climate, it’s time to change the norm.” The presentation formed part of the “College of the Future” session, highlighting the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs’ (DAERA) vision for a new generation of zero-carbon learning environments.
The Greenmount Campus redevelopment, part of DAERA’s Campuses of the Future programme, is designed to achieve Passivhaus Premium and BREEAM Outstanding certification. The development will comprise three key buildings; a Central Hub, Teaching Block, and 200-bed Student Accommodation; creating a connected, low-energy campus that demonstrates what is possible when sustainability is embedded from the outset.
Construction is expected to begin in summer 2026. Once complete, Greenmount Campus will stand alongside Erne Campus as a landmark example of how educational buildings can deliver world-class learning environments while dramatically reducing operational energy and carbon.
