Bushmills Courthouse is Perspective’s latest cover story

Hamilton Architects is delighted that our most recent conservation project – The Courthouse Shared Space Creative Hub at Bushmills – graces the cover of the latest edition of Perspective.

The derelict listed Georgian courthouse in the heart of Bushmills Conservation Area was refurbished and expanded to create a mixed-use shared space for the Coast & Glens community in Co Antrim.

On the At Risk Register for many years, the Grade B1 building was sensitively renovated and complemented with a modern three-storey, 15,600sq ft extension which accommodates an arts & crafts design space, 15 workshop units, a retail shop and café, and community engagement/performance facilities.

The Perspective case study was carried out by Richard Kennedy, who concluded: “Ultimately this project in whiskey town could be distilled down to a modest and sensitive addition to an existing building, but it is so much more than that.

“The real heart of this project is community; its success is undeniable as I watch people of all ages gather here to teach, learn, create, buy, sell and converse. The team at Hamilton Architects have given Bushmills a new diamond.”

Enterprise Causeway’s vision was for the project to support creative businesses, re-energise the community, create new jobs, and build a peaceful and a prosperous economy. Match-funding was provided by the Department for Communities NI and the Department of Rural and Community Development, Ireland.
