King Charles treated to showcase of sports during Newforge visit

King Charles was treated to a showcase of sports including rugby, football, hockey and Gaelic, when he dropped into Newforge Sports Complex and Event Hub during a recent flying visit to Belfast.

Newforge, which was delivered by a team led by Hamilton Architects, is a visionary new multi-million pound shared sports scheme which aims to build peace and reconciliation across Northern Ireland.

King Charles was greeted by Stormont Justice Minister Naomi Long and PSNI Chief Constable Jon Boutcher, while children from East Belfast GAA Academy helped serve up a royal welcome with a demonstration of Gaelic football and hurling skills.

The 16ha formerly restricted site was transformed through delivery of a 5,286m2 sports and leisure complex which includes a sports hall, fitness suites, treatment rooms, changing facilities, and office & conference space.

The facility also boasts four function suites which cater for up to 250 people, for use by the public, youth groups, schools and churches, as well as past and present members of the security forces and emergency services.
