Celebrity chef Neven Maguire was guest of honour at the opening of the new Food Innovation Centre at North West Regional College in Derry.

Hamilton Architects carried out the refurbishment for ‘Foodovation’, the region’s first centre of excellence for food development and technology.

The centre contains a food science lab, development and production kitchens, kitchen studio photography and videography, meeting rooms, a taste testing room and barista coffee training school.

Architect Simon Doran said: “The project required the refurbishment of classrooms to accommodate the relocation of existing crèche facilities, which were then refurbished to create Foodovation.

“It was quite challenging for us to meet all the client’s requirements to create state-of-the-art business centre of excellence for food given the limited floor space and the need for high levels of service supply, such as electricity, foul waste and LPG gas.

“Uniquely for this type of setting, we also provided a TV studio so that students can learn demonstration and presentation techniques in realistic surroundings, in collaboration with the college's media department.”

Simon, Associate Partner in Hamilton’s Derry office, said both elements were around 1,500ft2 each and the combined construction cost was £250k.

As well as encouraging and nurturing small to medium sized food businesses, Foodovation will provide industry specialists with the technical advice to ensure their route to market is successful and sustainable.

Neven Maguire said: “I’m very impressed by the centre. Foodovation will be a great asset to the college and will be very important for food producers locally.”

The Centre has picked up a top award at the Northern Ireland Food & Drink Awards. NWRC Foodovation Centre Manager Brian McDermott who collected the ‘Growing for the Future Award’ on behalf of the college said it was an honour to accept the award.
